Google Play feature graphic: size, design tips, and examples

The feature graphic is the one Play asset that is not optional, and it is the one most apps get wrong. It is a 1024×500 banner that sits behind your app icon and title, so it has a job that is different from the one a screenshot has.
What it actually looks like
It is not a header image. Your app icon and title are drawn on top of it, centred horizontally, in the top third of the listing page. The banner fills the width behind them, and the rest of it is the part a reader sees as they scroll.
So the wrong approach is to design a poster with your logo in the middle. The icon and the title are already there.
Design the lower half
The top centre is covered by the icon and the title. What you control is the space around them and the lower half of the canvas — which is where the artwork, the product shot, or the scene should go.
A useful composition is a single wide image or a soft gradient behind the icon, with a clear subject sitting low and to one side so it does not collide with the title.
Keep the centre clear
Leave a calm band across the middle where the title sits. If the artwork has a focal point there, the title lands on top of it and both become harder to read.
A background that is busy at the edges and quiet in the middle is the shape you are aiming for.
Match the palette to your screenshots
The feature graphic and the first phone screenshot are adjacent in the listing. If one is warm and orange and the other is cold and blue, the listing reads as two different products.
Use the same accent colour you use in the screenshots, and the same background tone. The banner then reads as the top of the same deck.
The rules that are actually enforced
Play Console is strict about the file and relaxed about the design. It checks the dimensions, the format, and the file size; it does not check whether the banner is tasteful.
- Exactly 1024 × 500 pixels — not 1024 × 501.
- 24-bit PNG or JPEG.
- No more than one feature graphic per listing.
- No transparency, and no text that looks like the app title — the store draws the real title.
Make the feature graphic in App Snaps
