How many screenshots should an App Store listing have?
October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
App Store Connect will take ten screenshots per app size. Google Play will take eight phone shots and four per tablet type. Both numbers are limits, not targets, and a listing padded to the limit is a listing where the last four slides go unread.
The first three do the work
The search results carousel shows roughly three screenshots, and the order is set by the person browsing. Whatever you put first is what most people see, whatever you put third is what most people do not.
So the first screenshot carries the promise, the second carries the proof, and the third removes the main objection. Everything after that is detail for the people who already decided to tap.
More screenshots are not free
Every extra screenshot is a piece of artwork that has to be designed, localized, and kept in step with the app. A listing with ten screenshots in eight languages is eighty images to maintain, and they rot the moment the UI changes.
Ship the number your story needs. Six good screenshots that say what the app does beat ten where the last four are feature-grid filler.
A workable structure
Most listings that convert well follow roughly the same arc, and it is worth copying the shape rather than the count.
- One — the promise, in five words or fewer, with the product on screen.
- Two — the core interaction, shown mid-action rather than at rest.
- Three — the feature that separates you from the obvious alternative.
- Four — the detail that justifies the rating: sync, export, integrations, offline.
- Five — the second audience: a different use case for the same app.
- Six onward — only if each one answers an objection you actually hear.
One size is not enough
The number people forget is the number of slots. A listing that supports iPhone and iPad needs both sets. If you only upload iPhone shots, iPad users see a letterboxed or cropped version of them, and the product page looks broken on a device you did not think about.
